Instructions to authors

All manuscripts submitted to the journal must be sent by email (text in a .doc/.docx file AND in a pdf file; + figures if there are some) to the following address: syria@cnrs.fr.

The editorial committee of Syria meets twice per year, in late Spring and late Fall, but submissions are accepted and treated all the year around. Articles are inscribed in the editorial process by order of arrival of their final approved.

The final approval of the manuscript is subject to the respect of the instructions below.

Important : any change of address (postal or email) during the evaluation and production process must be transmitted to the editor.

Languages

Manuscripts can be proposed in French, German, English, Spanish or Italian. The style must be correct, exempt from mistakes. The role of the editorial board and the managing editor is neither rewriting nor ending articles.

Typography

For articles in English, preference will be given to British English spelling and grammar. The journal generally follows the rules of the Chicago Manual of Style (University of Chicago Press). Articles in other languages will follow general rules applied in editorial styles of the language.

However, articles in all languages will follow the style of bibliography and the rules described below.

Text presentation

The manuscript will be sent by email in two electronic forms : text and PDF. The manuscripts using an alphabet other than Latin and using characters of transliteration, request unicode fonts only (for example TimesNewRoman).

It is recommended to split up a long text with subheads (3 levels maximum).

Bibliographical references will be rejected in footnotes in continuous numbering (and not included in brackets in the text) and abbreviated under the form <Author date> (author in small capital letters). The use of Id. And Ibid. is forbidden. These abbreviated references will be developed and gathered in a final bibliography which will correspond only to the references quoted in footnotes.

The use of internal references referring to a precise page is to be strictly limited (more general internal references – such as infra / supra – and internal references to footnotes are encouraged).

Abstracts and keywords

Articles must be accompanied with three abstracts. Accordingly, authors must join to their manuscript an abstract of of 1.000 characters (about 120 words) maximum in English, French and Arabic (if needed, the translation of the abstract into French and Arabic can be made by the editorial team).

Five keywords are also requested. The use of words referenced in the thesaurus proposed by Frantiq, pactols, is recommended:

Bibliographical references

Abbreviated references included in footnotes (and only those) will be developed at the end of the article (under one title “Bibliography” or two subtitles “Ancient sources” and “Modern references”), following the following rules
Author’s Name date Initial-first-name Name, Title of monograph (coll no), place.
Author’s Name date Initial-first-name Name, « Title of article », title of journal no, p. xxx-xxx.
Author’s Name date Initial-first-name Name, « Title of article », in Initial-first-name Name of editor (ed.), title of book, place, p. xxx-xxx.

The names of authors are in small capital letters (Ctrl-maj-K). If your software do not use small capitals, please use lowercase letters, not capitals. Ancient writers are written in lowercase.

Examples :
Vincent and Abel 1932 H. Vincent and F. M. Abel, Emmaüs, sa basilique et son histoire, Paris.
J.-M. Rousée, « Chronique archéologique. Jérusalem. Piscine Probatique », RB 69.1, p. 107-109.

It is deeply recommended to use the abbreviations of periodicals, collections and common works. Captions and credits

Each figure has to be numbered, indicated in the text with the mention (fig. X), a caption and a copyright. A list of figures, numbered continuously, with the caption (up to 15 words) and the exact credits (name of the author of the picture or the drawing, with the copyright sign ©, or the reference of the book where the picture has previously been published, or a precise url).

For example : © A. Chuzeville ; or : After Rallo 1989, fig. 12.

Enregistrement

Tiff for documents Photoshop in level of grey and in colors in 300 dpi.
Photoshop EPS for scanned documents in 1200 dpi.
Illustrator EPS for other drawings.

Documents of insufficient quality will be rejected.

Size of figures

The figures (photos b/w or couleur, drawings, figures, tables) must be compatible with a possible reduction and remain readable. We remind you that the threshold of legibility is 0.30 pt for the lines and of 6 pt for the text, and that the maximal justification of a page of Syria is 160 x 230 mm.

Authors can propose a scale of reproduction and a grouping of figures but they cannot lay out their manuscript, which is realized by the editorial team.

Transmission of figures

Illustrations, worked on Photoshop, Illustrator, Excel (for tables and graphs), or simply scanned, can be sent through an external transfer service such as WeTransfer, after approval of the editor.

Proofs

Please note that the journal’s publication process is as follows, to allow the preparation of both the printed and electronic versions. There are two steps for the validation of your article:

1/ The first proofs consists of a PDF of your manuscript, after structuration, preparation and correction. Any additional modification, correction or comment must be inscribed on these proofs, either by hand + scanned, or using the “track comments” mode in Acrobat.

The laying out is minimal and preliminary, especially concerning the figures, which are reproduced in the maximum size allowed by their initial quality. Figures will later be resized and moved around during the lay-out process.

These proofs are the last stage allowing modifications in the text of the article.

2/ Last proofs consist of a laid out PDF, for validating the place of the figures. No modification of the contents (text, captions, number of figures) is possible at this stage.
